MOLECULAR GENETIC EVALUATION – UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT
A collaboration on medical marijuana research with CT Pharmaceutical Solutions LLC - Gerald Berkowitz and Peter ApicellaCTPharma has undertaken research directed at the cultivation process of cannabis as a medication. Working with UConn, we are examining breeding and cultivation practices in order to create the best products on the market today. Cannabinoids in unfertilized female flowers of Cannabis sativa are known to increase in concentration over time. However, little is known about the gene expression levels of the enzymes that synthesize these cannabinoids. We are pretty pleased with the results from our most recent experiment with our flower. This work represents the first analysis of cannabinoid synthesis gene expression in the flower as it matures.

In Portland, Rino (pronounced like the Nevada city) Ferrarese heads operations at Connecticut Pharmaceutical Solutions (CTPharma), one of the four licensed production facilities in the state, with 20,000 square feet of indoor growing space. He won’t say how much the grow room at the heart of the operation yields. But its flagship proprietary brand, Lexikan, the most popular seller in the state, he says, accounts for “thousands of pounds a year.”

Under Connecticut law, Ferrarese’s company must ensure their products match the labels on their bottles — which they accomplish through pharmaceutical-grade extraction.
